Why bedrooms, not people, decide the tank size

It surprises most homeowners that septic sizing is driven by bedroom count rather than by who currently lives in the house. The reasoning is that a tank is a permanent part of the property and occupants are not: a couple in a four-bedroom house today could be a family of seven next year, and the tank has to cope either way. So health codes assign a design flow per bedroom — commonly in the region of 150 gallons per day — and set a floor, typically 1,000 gallons, that applies even to a small one or two bedroom home. This calculator compares the bedroom-based design flow with an occupancy-based estimate and sizes on whichever is greater, then rounds up to the next standard tank size that manufacturers actually pour.

Capacity is not just about storage, it is about time. A septic tank works by holding wastewater still long enough for heavy solids to settle into a sludge layer at the bottom and for grease and light material to float into a scum layer at the top, so that only relatively clear liquid in the middle passes on to the drain field. That separation needs roughly a day or more of quiet retention. Undersize the tank and every flush pushes partly untreated effluent, complete with suspended solids, straight into the drain field — which clogs the soil, destroys the field's ability to absorb, and turns a tank problem into a five-figure excavation. That is why the recommendation here is based on holding around two days of design flow.

A garbage disposal changes the maths, because it deliberately sends food solids and grease into a system built to separate them out. Many jurisdictions respond by requiring a larger tank, an extra compartment, or an effluent filter. High-volume fixtures matter for the same reason: a whirlpool tub dumping a large volume at once, or a water softener discharging brine, disturbs the settled layers and shortens effective retention time. Whatever number you land on, remember the tank is only half the system — the drain field is sized separately from a soil percolation test, and that test, not this page, governs what you can build.
