The one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet rule

Lawn fertilizer is not sold by how much lawn it feeds, it is sold by weight of product — and the product is mostly filler. The number that matters is actual nitrogen, the first figure in the N-P-K analysis on the bag. A 24-4-8 bag is 24% nitrogen by weight, so a 40 lb bag contains 40 × 0.24 = 9.6 lb of actual nitrogen. The standard turf rate is 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 ft² per application, which means that bag covers 9.6 × 1,000 = 9,600 ft² at a full rate. Work backwards from nitrogen and the arithmetic is always the same: pounds of product = (rate × area ÷ 1,000) ÷ (%N ÷ 100).

Rate is not the same as annual total. Most cool-season lawns get somewhere between 2 and 4 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² across a whole season, split into separate applications spaced weeks apart — never dumped on at once. If you are using a slow-release or coated product, a heavier single application is tolerated because the nitrogen is metered out over time; with a fast-release soluble source, drop to about half a pound per 1,000 ft² and go more often. Whatever you choose, calibrate the spreader against the number this calculator gives you: weigh the product into the hopper, cover a measured strip, and check what you actually put down rather than trusting the setting number printed on the bag, which assumes one specific spreader model.

Over-application is the failure mode worth designing against. Excess soluble nitrogen and salts pull water out of the grass blades and produce fertilizer burn — yellow-brown streaks that follow your spreader passes exactly, usually visible within a few days and worst in heat and drought. Whatever the turf cannot take up does not stay put either: it moves with rain and irrigation into storm drains, streams and lakes, where it feeds algae. Two habits prevent nearly all of it. Do not overlap passes — shut the spreader off at turns and use a deflector along beds and edges. And sweep or blow any granules that land on driveways, sidewalks and gutters back onto the lawn instead of hosing them away, because hard surfaces drain straight to the storm system.

Estimates for planning only. The application rate printed on the fertilizer label takes precedence over any general rule of thumb, and in many jurisdictions following the label is a legal requirement. Some regions also restrict phosphorus, set seasonal blackout dates or require setbacks from water — check your state, provincial or municipal rules, and have a soil test done before adding phosphorus or potassium.
